Colorado Hardscaping

Colorado Hardscaping That Works and WOWs

Great hardscaping does two things simultaneously — it solves real problems and it looks incredible doing it. Grade changes, erosion, drainage issues, and lack of usable space are all common challenges in Colorado yards, and hardscaping is often the most effective and beautiful solution.

Our masonry and hardscape crews work with natural and manufactured stone, concrete block, boulders, and structural fill to create retaining walls, terraces, walkways, steps, and raised planting beds that are engineered to perform in Colorado's demanding conditions.

Colorado soils are notoriously challenging — expansive clay, rocky mountain terrain, and severe freeze-thaw cycles all require a masonry contractor with deep local knowledge. We've built hardscape's across the Front Range for years and understand exactly how to make them last.

Retaining Walls

A retaining wall does two things at once — it solves a real problem and it makes your Colorado yard look extraordinary doing it. Whether you are dealing with a slope that erodes every time it rains, a grade change that makes your yard unusable, or simply a property that needs structure and definition, a well built retaining wall transforms the way your outdoor space functions and feels.

Explore the details

We design and build retaining walls in natural boulders, stacked stone, concrete block, and segmental wall systems throughout Denver, Boulder, Castle Rock, Highlands Ranch, and the entire Colorado Front Range. Every wall we build is engineered specifically for Colorado's expansive clay soils, freeze thaw cycles, and drainage conditions — the factors that determine whether a retaining wall lasts twenty years or fails in five.

With Outdoor Design Colorado, you get a retaining wall that is built right from the foundation up — proper drainage aggregate, geotextile fabric, compacted base, and expert stone placement from start to finish. The result is a wall that holds, performs, and looks like it belongs on your Colorado property for decades to come.

Accent Walls & Planters

An accent wall or custom planter does something quiet but powerful to a Colorado outdoor space. It creates definition. It gives the eye somewhere to land. It turns an open, undefined yard into a space that feels intentional, designed, and finished in a way that a patio or lawn alone simply cannot achieve on its own.

Explore the details

We design and build accent walls and custom raised planters in natural stone, concrete block, boulders, and decorative masonry throughout Denver, Boulder, Castle Rock, Highlands Ranch, and the entire Colorado Front Range. Whether you are looking for a low stacked stone wall that separates your patio from your lawn, a raised planter that brings your garden up to eye level, or a decorative accent wall that adds architectural character to your outdoor space, we build it to complement your home and thrive in Colorado's climate.

With Outdoor Design Colorado, every accent wall and planter is built with the same care and craftsmanship we bring to every project. The right materials, the right drainage, and the right design — so your outdoor space does not just look beautiful on the day we finish it, but continues to look that way for years to come.

Stair Ways & Walk Ways

A great walkway or set of outdoor stairs does something most people do not think about until it is done — it changes how you move through your own property. Suddenly the backyard feels connected. The side yard feels accessible. The grade change that used to feel awkward becomes a feature rather than an obstacle, and every step you take through your Colorado outdoor space feels purposeful and considered.

Explore the details

We design and build custom walkways and staircases in natural flagstone, concrete pavers, exposed aggregate, and cut stone throughout Denver, Boulder, Castle Rock, Highlands Ranch, and the entire Colorado Front Range. Whether you need a winding flagstone path that winds through your garden, a grand set of stone stairs that connects two levels of your yard, or a clean modern walkway that leads from the driveway to your front door, we design it to feel like it has always been part of your property.

With Outdoor Design Colorado, every walkway and staircase is built for Colorado's demanding climate. Proper base preparation, drainage grading, and material selection that holds up through freeze thaw cycles season after season — so your outdoor spaces stay beautiful, safe, and exactly as intended for years to come

Colorado know-how

Built for Colorado Hardscapes

Stone looks permanent, but Colorado ground moves. Great hardscapes are built from the ground down with that in mind.

Frost heave

Freezing ground can lift walls, steps and footings. Why it matters

Structures that are not set on a proper base, or that sit on poorly drained soil, can shift as the ground freezes and thaws. Correct base depth, compaction and drainage are what keep stonework straight and level for the long haul.

Water behind walls

Drainage is the real job of a retaining wall. Why it matters

Most retaining-wall failures start with water pressure building up behind the wall. Drainage aggregate, drain pipe and a planned outlet let water escape instead of pushing the wall over time.

Fire restrictions

Colorado burn bans shape which fire features you can use.Why it matters

During fire restrictions, many jurisdictions limit wood-burning fires, while gas fire features with a shut-off valve are often still allowed. Check your county's current rules; we can plan a gas or wood feature to suit how you want to use it.

Slopes and grade

Hillside lots are an opportunity, not a problem. Why it matters

Terracing a slope with walls and steps turns unusable hillside into flat, usable space for patios, gardens and seating, and it controls erosion and runoff at the same time.

Hardscape & Masonry Questions from Colorado Homeowners

How tall can a retaining wall be before it needs engineering?

In many Front Range cities, walls taller than about four feet, or walls holding back a driveway, structure or steep slope, need an engineered design and a permit. Requirements vary by jurisdiction, and we will tell you what your wall needs before we build.

Boulders or stacked stone for a retaining wall?

Boulder walls have a natural, rugged look that fits foothill and mountain settings and works well on larger slopes. Stacked stone and block walls give cleaner lines, tighter footprints and built-in options like seat walls, steps and lighting. Both need proper base preparation and drainage.

Should my fire feature be gas or wood-burning?

Wood gives you crackle and campfire smell. Gas lights instantly, produces no smoke or embers, and is often permitted during burn restrictions when wood fires are not. Many homeowners choose gas for everyday convenience. We can design either one.

What goes into a great outdoor kitchen?

Start with how you cook: a built-in grill, prep and serving counters, storage, and often a side burner, refrigerator or bar seating. Weather-rated appliances, durable countertops and a gas and electrical plan are key, and placing the kitchen close to the house and to the dining area makes it easy to use.

How long will stonework last in Colorado?

Well-built stone and masonry can last for generations. Longevity comes down to what you do not see: base preparation, drainage and correct construction for freeze-thaw conditions.
